Despite news that the iconic building is up for sale, hundreds of people came out Sunday to join the festivities as Honest Ed’s celebrated its 65th anniversary.

Those in attendance included Coun. Mike Layton, Toronto police chief Bill Blair and David Mirvish, son of the late Ed Mirvish – who opened the store in 1948.

Visitors were treated to free hot dogs and discount prices.

Mirvish also presented Chief Blair with a donation to the Toronto Police Widows and Orphans Fund – an organization the family has shown support to for decades.

“Not only have (the Mirvish family) been great citizens and made such a huge impact on the city of Toronto and the Bathurst and Bloor area, but they’ve also been tremendous support of all the emergency services,” Blair told those in attendance.

The bargain basement discount store — known for its loud, glaring signs —as well as the surrounding land at the corner of Bloor and Bathurst streets is on the market for a reported $100 million, the National Post first reported on Tuesday, citing sources.

Mirvish told CityNews the store will stay at its landmark location for at least another few years, depending on the speed of the sale.

“We have three years of birthday celebrations if it happened fast,” he explained. “If I don’t find a buyer that I like… it might happen slow.”
